2023 Jeep Compass To Borrow Dodge Hornet Engine, Get Nearly 100 HP Power Bump

Jeep may decide to significantly rejig the Compass’s engine lineup for 2023 with the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four from the Dodge Hornet, documents filed by the Environmental Protection Agency reveal.

First noticed by Car and Driver, the documents suggest that the Compass will drop its current 2.4-liter engine in favor of a turbocharged 2.0-liter unit, which will be offered with two power configurations.

The most exciting will give the 2023 Compass access to 270 hp (201 kW/274 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. That’s 93 more horses (69 kW/94 PS) than the 2022 Compass, whose 2.4-liter engine makes just 177 hp (132 kW/179 PS) right now.

The second option, also a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, will be less powerful, but will still offer more horsepower than the outgoing 2.4-liter engine. It will make 200 hp (149 kW/203 PS), but torque figures aren’t listed.

Both powertrain options will be offered with Jeep’s eight-speed automatic transmission. In combination with the new engines, it should all mark a big improvement for the Jeep Compass, which received a mid-cycle refresh for the 2022 model year.

Despite that improvement, Car and Driver reports that prices for the 2023 model year Compass will start at $31,590, just $1,210 more than it did in 2022. That’s not a bad premium for a crossover that will gain at least 23 hp (17 kW/23 PS) in the new year, especially when inflation is factored in.

The more powerful of the two engine configurations will also come standard in the brand new Dodge Hornet, which was unveiled in August. Prices for the new, more on-road focused crossover will start at $29,995. The engine was also supposed to be offered with the new, more expensive Alfa Romeo Tonale, though reports indicate that it will now only be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Full details for the 2023 model year Compass have not yet been revealed. It is not clear whether the crossover will gain any more improvements to go with its shiny new engine.
