Chrysler Capital Study Finds Audi e-tron Is Most Searched-For EV In America

Chrysler Capital has revealed the results of a study using Google search volume data to find information about what cars American internet users are looking to find out about.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the study skews rather positively for Chrysler (or Stellantis) products. The Jeep Wrangler, it finds, is both the most searched-for vehicle in America with 167,000 searches per month, on average, and the most searched-for vehicle to lease with 60,960 monthly searches.

The study does also suggest that the Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner are the next-most searched-for vehicles, followed by the Honda Civic and the Ford F-150.

As ranked on social media, the Civic is actually the most popular vehicle in America,  based on the number of Instagram hashtags it has. That’s not enormously surprising given the car’s popularity among enthusiasts and its attainable pricing. What is surprising to me, though, is that the relatively humdrum Honda CR-V is the sixth most popular car on Instagram by that measure with 1 million hashtags. That’s one fifth as many as the Civic and half as many as the Dodge Charger.

The data for electric vehicles, meanwhile, is even stranger. The popular new segment of the market has been taking up a lot of time, effort, and money from automakers, so it’s somewhat surprising to see that, according to Chrysler Capital, the Audi e-tron is the most searched-for vehicle in America with 4,460 monthly Google searches.

The e-tron is a perfectly good EV, so it’s not surprising that people are interested in it; it’s just unusual that it beat all Tesla models. More interesting still is that Tesla doesn’t appear at all in the list of most-searched-for EVs, which, in order, are the Audi e-tron, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, the Mercedes-Benz EQS, and the BMW i4.

Less stunning, meanwhile, is that, in terms of vehicle types, trucks are the most searched-for in America. The distinctly American segment nearly doubles Google searches of the second most popular vehicle type, the SUV. That is then followed by minivans, sedans, coupes, wagons, and hatchbacks, for which nearly no one is looking. Well, no surprise there, then.
