How to treat your pooch this International Dog Day

Pic: Patrick Browne

I’m a self-confessed crazy dog lady, and d’ya know what? I’m proud of it.

Our dogs provide us with so much: unconditional love, constant companionship, unwavering loyalty, everyday entertainment…it’s no surprise that there are scientific-based benefits of having a pooch around. Studies have proven that they reduce loneliness and stress, encourage us to move more, and boost oxytocin, our happy hormone.

So, they deserve ALL of the spoiling, in my opinion. Here’s how to treat your furry friend in honour of International Dog Day…

A dog-friendly night away

Lots of homegrown businesses are selling healthy, yummy dog treats, from Dublin-based business Happy Tails to Harry’s Dog Bakery, made in Monaghan. It’s worth paying that little bit extra for these natural, organic snacks that are full of goodness!

Subscription service

If you want to go all out, sign up for a subscription box (I like BusterBox) for regular drops of high-quality toys and homemade treats. Mine once included a Boris Johnson toy, which I happily allowed the dogs to tear apart (!)

Dog wardrobe

Yes, I am that person who buys clothes for my dogs. And why not?! They’re adorable, and they keep them warm in the cooler months. Irish Dog Designs make hand-knit Aran sweaters, while Petmania has a great range of dog-sized jumpers. In terms of accessories, I love Irish brand Wild Tails, who make the funkiest harnesses and collars in the likes of banana and leopard prints.

Their very own dry robe

Waterford entrepreneur Frances O’Reilly has just launched DogDry, the first product of its kind in Ireland and the UK. The super-absorbent drying coat, was designed by Frances after she broke down the technical capabilities used in super absorbent reusable nappies — genius! The perfect addition for those who like to bring their pooches along for a sea swim or walks on the beach.

Pampering

Petgreets.com is a gorgeous Irish site that sells natural, chemical-free grooming products, as well as all other dog-related items. I love their Oscars range, such as their Dirty Dog handmade soap, using neem oil for healthy skin and a shiny coat, and the freshening coat spray in grapefruit and geranium.
I love any kind of gadget, and when I heard about Three’s new pet range, I raced to three.ie to check out what’s on offer. For those who feel guilty leaving their dogs alone, the Petcube Bites2Lite Treat Dispenser is the stand-out product for me: its HD camera with a 160-degree view allows you to check in with your dogs when you’re out of the house, while two-way audio allows you to speak to them from afar. And better yet, you can toss treats from the device remotely, using your phone. Mind blown.
