It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, No, It’s A Candela Hydrofoil With Batteries Supplied By Polestar

Electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar announced a deal with Swedish hydrofoil manufacturer Candela that will see its boats powered by terrestrial EV battery packs.

“Polestar is a dream partner for us. While electrification of cars has come a long way in the last few years, the marine sector has fallen behind,” said Gustav Hasselkog, CEO of Candela. “Marrying our efficient hydrofoil technology to high-capacity batteries from Polestar means we can speed up the mass market adoption of electric boats together.”

Candela produces power boats that utilize computer-controlled hydrofoils. These act like a wing in the water and lift the structure of the boat out of the water. Beyond looking rad, that means that there’s much less drag, allowing its boats to use up to 80 percent less energy when compared to a traditional motorboat.

As a result of being electric, Candela’s boats also produce zero local emissions and minimal noise, making them more peaceful to ride on. And since the hull is out of the water, passengers are subject to fewer bumps when passing over small waves, making the experience more comfortable.

“I am fascinated by way [sic] Candela’s boats glide elegantly and efficient through, or better, over the water—amazing proof of the great aesthetics and experiences modern, sustainable technology can create,” said Thomas Ingenlath, the CEO of Polestar. “That Polestar will be part of future projects with Candela by supplying an essential part for the innovative propulsion of their boats, is awesome. As a battery supplier to Candela, we can help drive the transition to cleaner oceans and lakes, and electrify waterborne transport.”

Candela will be Polestar’s first third-party customer for batteries and charging systems. The companies say, however, that this is just the beginning, with both committing to exploring further opportunities in the future.
