L&T Commissions Green Hydrogen Plant At Hazira Facility Targetting 45 Kg Of Clean Fuel Per Day


Larsen & Toubro Ltd. has commissioned a green hydrogen plant at its manufacturing facility at Hazira in Gujarat. L&T will make 45 kg of green hydrogen per day from this facility, and will utilise it for captive consumption in the Hazira plant, the company said in an exchange filing.

Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen by using renewable energy. It holds potential in decarbonising industries that require high amounts of heat like steel and cement production.

Green hydrogen production, through alkaline electrolysis process began on Saturday. Alkaline electrolysis which utilises alkaline electrolyzers to decompose water into oxygen (at anode) and hydrogen (at the cathode) through electrolysis.

The plant is designed for an electrolyser capacity of 800 kW, including both alkaline (380 kW) and PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) (420 kW) technologies, the company. The plant will be powered by rooftop solar plant of 990 kW peak DC capacity and 500kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The alkaline electrolyser has been installed while the PEM electrolyser is part of future expansion. A blend of 15% hydrogen with natural gas will be used as fuel at the plant, spread across 3,000 square meters, in which high purity green hydrogen (99.99%) will be generated.

The move is ‘in-line’ with the company’s climate leadership targets, said, Subramanian Sarma, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Energy) at L&T.

L&T had earlier pledged to achieve water neutrality by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2040, as per its ESG commitments. Ability to make green hydrogen could be crucial to the company’s transition to clean fuel.

The government is looking to incentivise green hydrogen production in the country as it tries to speed up the shift away from fossil fuels. Earlier this year, it announced a national hydrogen policy looking to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030.
