Mercedes eActros LongHaul Concept To Debut In September, Production Model Due In 2024


The Tesla Semi is still missing in action, but the competition isn’t waiting as Mercedes-Benz Trucks has announced plans to introduce the eActros LongHaul concept in September.

Designed to preview the upcoming production model, the 40-ton truck promises to be sleek and eco-friendly. The teasers aren’t very revealing, but we can see LED lighting units and a massive three-pointed star.

The first prototypes are already undergoing testing and near-production prototypes will be delivered to customers next year for real-world testing. If everything goes smoothly, series production will begin in 2024.

While the company is only releasing a handful of details at this point, they revealed the eActros LongHaul will have a lithium-iron phosphate battery pack that provides a range of around 311 miles (500 km) on a single charge. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz Trucks revealed the model will have a “megawatt charging” capability, which will enable the battery pack to go from 20-80% in “well under 30 minutes.”

Charging times shouldn’t be an issue as the company noted a “lion’s share of long-distance transport applications in transporters’ operational practices do not require a range beyond” 311 miles (500 km) and European Union regulations require truck drivers take a minimum 45 minute break after 4.5 hours of driving. Thanks to the aforementioned fast charging technology, the eActros LongHaul can be quickly replenished while drivers take their break.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks CEO Karin Rådström stated, “The electrification of heavy long-distance transport is the next milestone on our road to CO2-neutrality.” He added, the eActros LongHaul is slated to be “economically feasible for our customers” and he looks forward to introduce the truck this fall.
