Porsche Unveils Its Gen3 Competitor For The 2023 Formula E Series

Porsche today took the wraps off the 99X Electric Gen3, its competitor for the 2023 season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. All new for the coming year, the Gen3 racecar is more powerful and more technically impressive than its predecessor.

“Our development team in Weissach have invested a great deal of work, experience, heart and soul into this race car,” said Thomas Laudenbach, the VP of Porsche Motorsport. “They can all be truly proud of the result. Like the all-new Formula E generation, the Porsche 99X Electric Gen3 represents a technological milestone in all-electric racing.”

Featuring an updated livery, the race car is supposed to have a “striking” new look that was inspired by the Porsche brand purpose “Driven by Dreams”. It is also intended to appeal to a younger target audience.

Mostly, though, it was designed to fit around new body work that was required by the Gen3 Formula E car that was unveiled in April of this year. Described as the series’ fastest car to date, it’s also the smallest car the series has raced.

That’s thanks to smaller batteries that are now capable of recuperating twice as much energy under braking as the Gen2 Formula E car, allowing the smaller car to have a more powerful 469 hp (350kW/476 PS) motor powering the rear wheels.

“The new Gen3 vehicles, including our Porsche 99X Electric Gen3, will hopefully make the races even more spectacular for fans and give the popularity of Formula E worldwide even more of a boost,” said Florian Modlinger, the director of factory motorsport for Fomula E. “There’s a sense of excited anticipation as we head into the new ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season.”

The Porsche 99X Electric Gen3 will be driven by Antonio Felix da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein in 2023, who say that work is ongoing on the new car. The electric single seater will make its race debut at the Mexico City E-Prix on January 14, 2023.
