Tangerine has updated the signup bonuses for their two cash back credit cards: the Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard and Tangerine World Mastercard.
With this refresh, the signup bonus has been drastically elevated back to their all-time-high offer of 15% cash back in the first two months, up to a maximum of $150 cash back for spending $1,000.
15% Cash Back in the First Two Months
The Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard and Tangerine World Mastercard are both offering 15% cash back on the first $1,000 spent in the first two months, equivalent to $150 cash back.
That’s all there is to it, with no requirement to spend in any particular categories or to hold the card for any specified length of time. The 15% cash back offer ends on September 30, 2022.
This matches the highest welcome offer that Tangerine has put out in the past few years, and marks a return to the all-time-high level for the first time in Fall 2021.
Outside of these limited-time bonuses, Tangerine often does not offer any signup incentive at all on their twin Mastercard products, making it a great time to apply if you’ve been interested in the card.
How Does This Compare with Other Cash Back Offers?
Keep in mind that while 15% appears to be a very high cash back welcome offer, it’s still capped at $1,000 in spending or $150 in cash back.
Comparing to other products in the range of no-fee cash back credit cards, the SimplyCash Card from American Express also stands out with a higher $200 cash back in six months.
The SimplyCash’s $200 cash back takes the form of a lower 4% return in the first six months up to $5,000 of spending. You’d have to spend a much higher amount of $5,000 in six months to get all $200 back, but it’s still a higher overall welcome bonus.
For those who may not want to “waste” so much spending capacity on cash back cards, the Tangerine Mastercards would be a better value proposition at a much lower $1,000 minimum spend.
What’s Unique About the Tangerine Mastercards?
Tangerine is known for offering a “choose your own adventure” approach to bonus earning categories: you’ll receive 2% cash back on up to three categories of your choice. This is identical across both the Tangerine World Mastercard and the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card.
This makes it an excellent long-term “keeper card” for just about anyone, since you can simply choose the categories that you most commonly spend in, and then use it as your regular card for ongoing purchases in those categories.
The categories available for selection are:
- Recurring bill payments
- Home improvement
- Public transportation & parking
Cardholders who only hold the credit card get to choose two categories, while those who have a Tangerine Savings account can choose a third category.
Even if you use more powerful credit cards for some of the more commonplace spending categories (like groceries and dining), Tangerine offers an elevated 2% return on select categories that no other credit card matches, such as furniture and home improvement.
In all other categories, both Tangerine cards earn a flat 0.5% cash back, so it wouldn’t necessarily be the best choice for regular uncategorized purchases.
If you’re deciding between the Tangerine World Mastercard and the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card, note that they have identical earning structures and both have no annual fee.
We’d recommend those with a respective personal or household annual income of at least $60,000 or $100,000 to apply for the Tangerine World Mastercard, since it offers a beefier insurance package including car rentals and mobile device protection.
Tangerine has increased the signup bonuses for both the Tangerine World Mastercard and the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card: 15% cash back in the first two months up to $1,000 of spending, equivalent to $150 cash back.
This matches the cards’ all-time-high welcome offers from back in Fall 2021, making it a great time to apply for anyone eyeing the Tangerine credit cards for their “choose your 0wn adventure” bonus structure.
