Just as we saw last winter, TD has launched a new round of alternative offers for some of its credit cards. The most notable offer this time around is for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card.
Until January 3, 2023, you can choose this “in-path offer” via the Air Canada website and earn 100,000 Aeroplan points plus a $300 statement credit on Air Canada or Air Canada Vacations purchases.
It’s important to note that this in-path offer is for 5,000 fewer Aeroplan points than the public offer, but that difference is easily offset by the $300 statement credit. Indeed, it makes the in-path offer the strictly superior way to apply for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card.
New In-Path Offer: 100,000 Aeroplan Points + $300 Air Canada Statement Credit
This alternative offer for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card is known as an “in-path offer”: it shows along the path of booking an Air Canada flight.
This time around, the alternative offer is also available on the Air Canada website, albeit with some clicking around and no need to go through the booking process.
The breakdown of the welcome bonus on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege is as follows:
- Earn 20,000 Aeroplan points when you make your first purchase
- Earn an additional 30,000 Aeroplan points when you spend $3,000 in the first 90 days
- Earn an additional 50,000 Aeroplan points when you spend $12,000 and the account is open and in good standing at 12 months
- Earn a $300 statement credit upon spending at least $300 on an Air Canada purchase in the first six months
Factoring in the $300 Air Canada statement credit, the card’s first-year annual fee effectively drops from $599 to $299.
The full terms and conditions of this offer are as follows:
Must apply by January 3, 2023. Welcome Bonus of 20,000 Aeroplan points will be awarded to the Aeroplan Member account associated with the TD®Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card Account of the Primary Cardholder (“Account”) only after the first eligible Purchase is made on the Account that is not subsequently rescinded, the subject of a charge back request or otherwise disputed. For Residents outside of Quebec: To receive the additional bonus 30,000 Aeroplan points you must make $3,000 in net Purchases on your Account, including your first Purchase, within 90 days of Account opening. To receive the 50,000 Aeroplan points Anniversary bonus (“Anniversary Bonus“) your Account must have been opened and active for 12 months and you must make $12,000 in net Purchases (less any returns and credits) on your Account, including your first Purchase within 365 days of Account opening. To qualify for the $300 statement credit, an eligible Air Canada purchase of at least $300 total must be charged to your Card and posted to your Account within the first 6 months of Account opening. Eligible purchases for the $300 statement credit offer are those made directly from Air Canada for products and services that are i) completed online at aircanada.com, ii) completed in-person at an Air Canada customer service counter at the airport and iii) Air Canada Vacations packages. Air Canada must be identified as the merchant of record, and only purchases from a merchant coded with Merchant Category Code (MCC) 3009 (excluding purchases made through 3rd party travel agencies) will be eligible for the $300 statement credit. Here are some examples that do not qualify for the statement credit offer: i) if the purchase for an Air Canada product is not made directly with Air Canada, such as if you make a purchase through a third-party or non-direct travel agent; or ii) if you make a purchase for non-Air Canada products from aircanada.com, such as a car rental, a hotel booking, or any other product or services from a third-party partner. Eligible purchases do not include fees, gift cards, cash advances, balance transfers, cash-like transactions, interest charges, optional services, refunds, rebates, or other similar credits. The statement credit will be applied to the Account within 90 days from date of purchase. The applicable statement credit is an Account statement credit, not a price reduction applicable when making an eligible purchase. A maximum of one statement credit of $300 can be earned per Account. For Quebec Residents only: To receive the additional bonus 30,000 Aeroplan points you must make $3,000 in net Purchases on your Account, including your first Purchase, within 90 days of Account opening. To receive the 50,000 Aeroplan points Anniversary bonus (“Anniversary Bonus”) your Account must have been opened and active for 12 months and you must make $12,000 in net Purchases (less any returns and credits) on your Account, including your first Purchase within 365 days of Account opening. To qualify for the $300 statement credit, an eligible purchase of at least $300 must be charged to your Card and posted to your Account within the first 6 months of Account opening and not be subsequently rescinded, the subject of a charge back request or otherwise disputed. Eligible purchases do not include fees, gift cards, cash advances, balance transfers, cash-like transactions, interest charges, optional services, refunds, rebates, or other similar credits. The applicable statement credit is an Account statement credit, not a price reduction applicable when making an eligible purchase. A maximum of one statement credit of $300 can be earned per Account. The statement credit will be applied to the Account within 90 days from date of purchase. For all Accounts: The Primary Cardholder is responsible for all charges to the Account, including those made by any Additional Cardholder. Other conditions apply. If you have opened an Account in the last 12 months, you will not be eligible for this offer. We reserve the right to limit the number of Accounts opened by one person, and the number of Welcome Bonus Aeroplan points, additional bonus Aeroplan points and statement credits awarded to any one person or Account. Offers may be changed, withdrawn or extended at any time and cannot be combined with any other offer unless otherwise specified. Your Account must be open and in good standing at the time the Welcome Bonus Aeroplan points, additional bonus Aeroplan points and statement credit are awarded. Please allow up to 8 weeks after the conditions for each offer are fulfilled for the Welcome Bonus Aeroplan points and additional bonus Aeroplan points to be credited to your Aeroplan Member account. Aeroplan terms and conditions also apply to this offer, please visit: aircanada.com/Aeroplan-termsandconditions.
There are two key differences between the in-path offer and the main offer:
- Instead of an extra 55,000 Aeroplan points upon spending $12,000 and having the account be in good standing at 12 months, you earn 50,000 Aeroplan points in the same timeline.
- There’s no first-year annual fee waiver in either offer, but the Air Canada in-path offer has a $300 statement credit.
Is a $300 Statement Credit Better Than 5,000 Aeroplan Points?
The current public offer for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card is 105,000 Aeroplan points, distributed as follows:
- 20,000 Aeroplan points upon first purchase
- 30,000 Aeroplan points upon spending $3,000 in the first 90 days
- 55,000 Aeroplan points upon spending $12,000 in the first year
Compared to the in-path offer for a total of 100,000 Aeroplan points and a $300 Air Canada statement credit, which offer is better?
The answer is clear: at our current valuation of Aeroplan points at 2.1 cents per point (CAD), 5,000 points would be worth $105. Since the difference between the two offers is $105 worth of Aeroplan points and a $300 statement credit, the in-path offer comes out ahead by a solid $195.
Furthermore, both offers give 50,000 Aeroplan points within the first three months. So, before paying a second annual fee, the in-path offer is $300 ahead, since the statement credit is provided as soon as an eligible $300 purchase with Air Canada is made.
Conclusion
TD and Aeroplan continue to shake up their credit card offers. The latest is a new in-path credit card offer for 100,000 Aeroplan points + $300 Air Canada statement credit on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card.
Be sure to apply by January 3, 2023 by following the dedicated link to the Air Canada website if you’re interested. Alternatively, the public offer for 105,000 Aeroplan points is also available until the same date.
By our Points Valuations, the Air Canada in-path offer is strictly superior in this case, unless you have a compelling need for an additional 5,000 Aeroplan points after holding the card for 12 months.
