This Unofficial Ferrari 288 GTO Hommage Study Will Make You Forget About The 296 GTB

This story contains independent illustrations of a fictional Ferrari 288 GTO Hommage made by Zhiheng Guo that are neither related to nor endorsed by Ferrari.

One could argue that there are a few too many cars out there paying homage to the designs of their predecessor. Sometimes, looking at the design of an old model and modernizing it works out well, like with the Koenigsegg CC850. Things don’t always work out so well, though, as evidenced by the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4.

So, when talented designer Zhiheng Guo told us he had created a modern interpretation of the iconic Ferrari 288 GTO, we were a little bit worried about how it may turn out. We needn’t have worried as not only is it drop-dead gorgeous but it might even be better looking than the car that inspired it.

In creating the car, the designer adopted a similar wedge shape to the 288 GTO but has made it look fresh with more flowing lines and some complex angles. This is particularly evident along the sides of the car where the simple NACA ducts of the original have been replaced by air intakes that flow seamlessly from the doors.

The front of the 288 GTO Hommage is particularly eye-catching as it lacks traditional headlights and makes do with narrow LEDs positioned just above the blacked-out front grille. The lights may not be very functional in the real world but they definitely look good.

Other key highlights of the design include the squared-off rear wheel arches and the sexy five-spoke wheels.

Then we come to the rear. Obvious design inspiration has been taken from the Ferrari 296 GTB but we think Guo’s car looks even better, thanks to the slimmer LED taillights, a central exhaust mounted lower on the fascia, and a slightly more pronounced diffuser. The shape of the rear engine cover, buttresses, and tiny rear window are also similar to the 288 GTO.

Thanks to Zhiheng Guo for sharing his work with us!
