Watch The Stig Manhandle An 847HP Mustang Around Top Gear Track On Its Way To A New Record

Those who want a special American car imported to the UK can count on Clive Sutton to deliver. Now, the luxury and performance dealership has come up with something even more special. The CS850R is a track-focused monster and the Stig certainly has its hands full as he pilots it around the track and into the history books.

At its base, the CS850R is a Mustang GT with a bespoke Whipple supercharger bolted onto the intake and a few other special parts that we’ll get to shortly. That supercharger helps the car develop a total of 847 bhp (858 hp / 639 kW) and 665 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. To put that in perspective, the stock Ford Mustang GT makes just 464 hp (346 kW) and 420 lb-ft (568 Nm) of torque.

On top of the additional power, Clive Sutton adds beefed-up anti-roll bars, stronger chassis bracing, new subframe parts, active shocks, and ‘linear’ springs. A shorter 3.37 final drive ratio and a Torsen differential “makes the car more eager at launch and when pushing out of a corner, while hard acceleration feels faster and more aggressive,” according to Clive Sutton.

Push out of corners faster it does as the Stig grabs this pony by its mane and rides it to a 1:22.3 lap time around the Top Gear test track. Throughout the lap the Mustang demonstrates its track prowess with little to no fishtailing. Over big bumps and bruises in the pavement, it remains composed too.

That lap time is a full 5.7 seconds faster than the next quickest Mustang, a Roush-modified version from the mid-2000s. It’s also barely quicker than a C6 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 which posted a 1.22.4 during the eighth season of the show. Of course, many cars are quicker but some might surprise you.

Tesla’s Model 3 Performance only needed 1:21.5 seconds to get around the track. The F90 BMW M5 did the deed in 1:19.8. And Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S did it in 1:17.6. Nevertheless, the video below is worth a watch if for the supercharger whine alone.
